On May 22, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia on the sidelines of the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Bishkek.

Wang Yi noted that against the rapidly changing international situation, China and Russia should maintain close communication at any time, strengthen comprehensive strategic coordination, and safeguard the basic norms governing international relations and common interests of the two countries. Both sides should also jointly elevate SCO cooperation in various fields to new stages, and give play to the constructive role of the cooperation organization in an emerging area. Moreover, the two sides should make joint efforts to elaborately prepare for President Xi Jinping's state visit to Russia and his attendance at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum next month, and take the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations as an opportunity to push China-Russia comprehensive strategic coordination to a new era.

Under the joint efforts of China and Russia, this meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the SCO has sent out positive signals, which is conducive to maintaining the international system with the United Nations as the core and safeguarding the international order based on international law. The two countries should intensify coordination to push the SCO Bishkek Summit in June for a complete success. The Russian side stands ready to work with the Chinese side to spare no efforts in well preparing for President Xi Jinping's state visit to Russia and his attendance at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, and ensure the success of the visit so as to inject new impetus into bilateral relations.
