Wang Qishan Visits Pakistan

2019-05-29

From May 26 to 28, 2019 local time, Vice President Wang Qishan visited Pakistan at the invitation of Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan. Wang Qishan met with President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan respectively in Islamabad.

During the meeting with Arif Alvi, Wang Qishan said, China and Pakistan are "iron friends". The two countries have always respected and supported each other on issues concerning each other's core interests throughout the past 68 years since the establishment of diplomatic relationship and forged the most sincere friendship regardless of changes in the international landscape. In recent years, the development of China-Pakistan relations has maintained a sound momentum, with mutual political trust further enhanced, practical cooperation continuously deepened and more vibrant people-to-people and cultural exchanges. The construction of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has made tangible achievements and has become an important hallmark for China-Pakistan friendly cooperation in the new era. My visit is to send out a signal once more to the two peoples and the world that China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic cooperative partners. The Chinese side is willing to strengthen the all-around cooperation with the Pakistani side in various sectors and at various levels to make the China-Pakistan friendship better benefit the two peoples and forge a closer China-Pakistan community of shared future in the new era.

Arif Alvi first extended his congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, saying that Pakistan-China cooperation has become more important in the current backdrop. The Pakistani side firmly upholds the One-China policy and firmly supports the Chinese side in safeguarding its core and major interests. Pakistan stands ready to deepen practical cooperation with China in areas such as agriculture, tourism, economy and trade, and jointly push forward the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership between China and Pakistan. Pakistan highly appreciates China's staunch support on its major issues and expects China to play a bigger role in international and regional affairs.

After the meeting, Arif Alvi conferred on Wang Qishan the Nishan-e-Pakistan.

While meeting with Imran Khan, Wang Qishan noted, China and Pakistan share many in common and are natural friends and partners from the perspective of history and reality. Mr. Prime Minister has visited China twice since taking office and reached important consensus with President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders on pushing forward bilateral relations. The Chinese side is willing to work with the Pakistani side to deepen high-level exchanges, enhance strategic communication and practical cooperation as well as closely coordinate in international and regional affairs. For the next phase, the two sides should promote high-quality development of the CPEC, make solid progress in the construction of industrial parks and agricultural cooperation, accelerate the implementation of early harvest projects on social and people's livelihood, and actively explore third-party cooperation to promote high-quality development of the CPEC. Both sides should promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges and cooperation and continue to strengthen the non-governmental forces supporting China-Pakistan friendship. Wang Qishan hoped that the Pakistani side can take effective measures to provide security guarantee for the cooperation and exchanges between China and Pakistan.

Imran Khan said that the Pakistani side adheres to the friendship with China, admires the achievements of China's reform and opening up and stands ready to consolidate the traditional friendship with China. Pakistan hopes to learn experience of state governance from China and enhance exchanges and cooperation with China in areas such as agricultural technology, special economic zone construction, talent training and anti-corruption. The construction of the CPEC yields fruitful results, contributing greatly to Pakistan's economic development and improvement of people's livelihood. The Pakistani side has established a special committee to take charge of inter-department and inter-sector coordination and ensure the safety of the CPEC projects and personnel of Chinese institutions in Pakistan. The Pakistani side will continue to strengthen coordination with the Chinese side on international and regional affairs and enrich the connotations of the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership between Pakistan and China.

After the meeting, Wang Qishan and Imran Khan jointly witnessed the signing of bilateral cooperation documents concerning agriculture, customs and disaster relief.

During the visit, Wang Qishan also met with Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar and Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar of Punjab Province, attended and addressed the Friends of Silk Road Forum and visited Haier-Ruba Economic Zone.
