|German Chancellor Angela Merkel Meets with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi|
On 13 February local time, German Chancellor Angela Merkel met with Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Berlin.
Merkel asked Wang to convey her best wishes to President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang. She welcomed Wang's visit to Germany at a time when China is fighting the novel coronavirus outbreak. She highly commended China's decisive and forceful response and tremendous efforts, and said that Germany would continue to support, help and work with China. She expressed confidence that China would prevail over the epidemic and rooted for China.
Wang conveyed cordial greetings from President Xi and Premier Li. He stressed that, under the leadership of President Xi, the Chinese government and people are pooling resources from across the whole nation and going all out to control the epidemic. These efforts are producing results. The dropping number of confirmed cases shows that the epidemic is controllable, and the notable rise in the number of cured and discharged cases shows that it is curable. Wang said that we are making the utmost efforts to protect the health of the Chinese people as our top priority, and at the same time, we are working to stem the spread of the outbreak to other parts of the world, thus contributing to global public health security. China has the capacity, confidence and resolve to defeat the epidemic, overcome the temporary difficulties, meet its economic and social development goals for this year, and complete the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects. China appreciates that Germany has adopted a cool-headed and sensible approach to the epidemic, taken seriously WHO's recommendations, and remained committed to maintaining the existing exchanges between China and Germany. China believes that emerging from the test of this epidemic, the trust and cooperation between China and Germany will scale a new height.
Merkel said that this year will see several important agendas between China and Germany and between China and Europe. I will stay in close contact with Chinese leaders to promote Germany-China cooperation. On the development of 5G network, Germany would like to see mutual opening of markets with China and will not exclude any specific enterprises. Germany hopes that the EU and China will work together to speed up the negotiation of an investment agreement. Germany sets great store by China's important role on major international and regional issues, and will enhance communication and coordination with China.
Wang noted the need for China and Germany, being responsible major countries and each other's comprehensive strategic partners, to enhance political mutual trust and strategic coordination and work together to tackle the common challenges facing the world. China welcomes another visit by Chancellor Merkel this year, and hopes that Germany will provide an open, non-discriminatory investment environment with a level playing field for Chinese businesses. China will work with Germany to ensure that China and the EU seize the opportunity to take their relations to a higher level and join hands to uphold multilateralism and international rules and to build an open world economy, thus demonstrating with concrete facts that China and Europe are cooperation partners rather than rivals.
