State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets ICRC President Peter Maurer

2020-02-15

On 15 February, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer on the sidelines of the 56th Munich Security Conference.

Wang briefed Maurer on China's response to the novel coronavirus outbreak. He noted that China's response is a perfect and thorough example of the ICRC's humanitarian tradition and respect for life. President Xi Jinping has emphasized that people's lives are paramount and the outbreak is a rallying call. Under the strong leadership of President Xi, the 1.4 billion Chinese people have been fully mobilized to support and safeguard Wuhan. The country has spared no effort to save each and every life threatened by the virus, to protect people's lives and health with the strongest resolve, and to meet its responsibility for global public health security. China is prepared to deepen cooperation with the ICRC, particularly in Africa and other regions, and to contribute to international humanitarianism and global health.

On behalf of the ICRC, Maurer commended the Chinese government for its tremendous efforts to fight the epidemic, particularly to contain its spread. Having delivered assistance to China, the ICRC will continue to provide full support with great confidence that the country will win the battle against the epidemic at an early date. The ICRC applauds China's commitment to global public health security, especially its strong support for Africa, and its efforts to strengthen medical and healthcare capacity in fragile countries. The ICRC hopes China will share more of its experience, and stands ready to deepen cooperation with China.
