State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Secretary Teodoro Lopez Locsin of the Philippines

On February 19, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Secretary Teodoro Lopez Locsin of the Philippines in Vientiane, Laos.

Wang Yi said that the Chinese people are now resolutely fighting the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and we are deeply touched by the facts that President Duterte has publicly expressed his firm support for China on many occasions, the Foreign Secretary has refuted the attacks against and smearing of China, and the government and all sectors of society of the Philippines have made donations in cash and kind. This fully reflects the strong and profound ties between the two peoples. We believe that after withstading the test of the epidemic, the friendship and trust between the two peoples will grow even stronger. Wang expressed his appreciation that the Philippines, as the country coordinator of ASEAN-China relations, has done a lot of organization and coordination work for convening the special foreign ministers' meeting. Wang said he believed that through joint efforts, tomorrow's meeting would be smooth and successful, showing the solidarity between China and ASEAN and sending a clear message to the outside world that China and ASEAN will join hands to cope with common challenges and work for reaching new consensus on strengthening regional health cooperation. Wang emphasized that China attaches great importance to China-Philippine relations and will continue to support the Philippines in its efforts to uphold its legitimate rights and interests on the international arena.

Locsin handed over a personal letter from President Duterte to President Xi Jinping and said that the Philippine government and people stand firmly side by side with the Chinese government and people and highly appreciate and support China's determined measures to combat the epidemic. Those unfounded accusations against China are totally unjust. In times of adversity, the Philippines will be China's true friend. The Philippine side thanks China for its generous assistance in times of difficulties. Although the Philippines can only provide modest assistance to China this time, it shows the friendship of the Philippine people towards China. Locsin said that he was pleased to co-chair together with Wang tomorrow's special foreign ministers' meeting. At this important moment, the Philippines will do its utmost to advance ASEAN’s solidarity and cooperation with China.
