President Xi Jinping Talked with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte over the Phone

President Xi Jinping talked with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte over the phone on the evening of 16 March.

Xi stressed that in the past weeks and months, China and Italy have both gone through the severe test posed by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. After months of hard efforts, epidemic prevention and control in China have secured positive changes and made important progress. Economic and social development is returning to normal at a quicker pace. That said, however, China will remain as dedicated as ever in the fight against the epidemic. We will strive to defeat the disease at an early date and provide a source of confidence to other countries in controlling the epidemic.

Xi reaffirmed China's firm support for the resolute measures adopted by the Italian government to combat the epidemic. China is confident that Italy will prevail over the COVID-19 outbreak. In the spirit of solidarity, China will send additional medical teams and experts to Italy and provide medical supplies and other assistance to the best of its ability. China is ready to work with Italy to contribute to international cooperation on epidemic control and to the building of a "Health Silk Road". China is convinced that by fighting COVID-19 together, the two countries will deepen their traditional friendship and mutual trust and open up broader prospects in cooperation across the board.

Conte congratulated the Chinese government on effectively containing the epidemic thanks to its strong measures, calling it an encouragement and inspiration for Italy and other countries. He thanked China for providing valuable support and assistance to Italy at this difficult moment, which once again, demonstrates the profound friendship between the two peoples. On behalf of the Italian government and people, Conte expressed heartfelt thanks to China and shared his belief that the Italy-China relationship will emerge even stronger from the outbreak.
