Wang Yi: Adherence to the One China Principle Is the Political Foundation of China-Czech Relations

2020-09-01

On September 1, 2020 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Heiko Maas of Germany met the press together in Berlin. A journalist asked, you mentioned mutual respect, but why does the Chinese side react strongly to the Czech Senate Speaker's visit to Taiwan?

Wang Yi expressed, the Czech Senate Speaker's visit to Taiwan is an act that seriously interferes in China's internal affairs and the Chinese side has no choice but to make necessary response. There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, which has been the general consensus of the international community. Adherence to the One China principle is the political foundation for China to establish diplomatic relations with other countries including the Czech Republic, and also the political commitment made by the Czech Republic to China. The Czech government and those holding public power in the Czech Republic should abide by this political commitment.

Wang Yi noted, in defiance of the opposition from the Chinese side and the Czech government, the Czech Senate Speaker insists on visiting the Taiwan region of China, openly supported the separatist forces for "Taiwan independence", and even instigated other countries to follow suit. It is a blatant provocation. The Chinese side must tell the Czech Senate Speaker: You have crossed the line! To safeguard China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity is the responsibility of every Chinese people, particularly the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. The Chinese side is the one who has been infringed, not the one who created the problem. The Chinese side must lay out its clear stand with regard to safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
