2020-12-15

On December 14, 2020, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at the latter's request.

Wang Yi said that this year the two heads of state had phone conversations and exchanged messages, fully representing strategic mutual trust and close relations between China and Qatar. Both countries need to continue to support each other on issues involving their core interests and major concerns. China fully supports Qatar in hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and will make sure the construction of Lusail Stadium will proceed as scheduled. Both sides need to deepen practical cooperation on energy, infrastructure construction and investment, expand cooperation on new infrastructure, new industries and new forms of business such as 5G communications and AI, facilitate the building of China-GCC FTA, and enrich the China-Qatar strategic partnership.

Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said that Qatar attaches great importance to the strategic partnership with China. The leaders of the two countries have maintained a deep friendship. Qatar appreciates the positive role played by Chinese enterprises in supporting infrastructure construction in Qatar, and stands ready to reinforce all-round cooperation with China in energy and other fields. Qatar shares broad consensus with China on international and regional issues. Both sides should continue to enhance coordination and communication and safeguard common interests.
