On July 12, 2008, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with the chief negotiators of the six-party talks at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.

Yang said that it is beneficial to the people of six countries and the world at large to realize the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the long-lasting peace and stability in Northeast Asia. With the joint efforts of all parties concerned, the talks have made important and world-acclaimed achievements which fully demonstrate the political sincerity and determination of the parties to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and prove the six-party talks to be an effective platform to solve the nuclear issue on the Peninsula and build peace and security in Northeast Asia.

The heads of delegation meeting was held with high efficiency, which agreed to establish the verification and monitoring mechanisms, passed the guiding principles of the mechanisms and mapped out the timetable of implementing the remaining action of the second phase, noted Yang. The six parties also discussed the principles of building the peace and security mechanism in Northeast Asia and the meeting of foreign ministers of the six parties. The six party talks now stand at a turning point of moving into the next phase and face important chances of making new progress. He expressed hope that the six parties could seize the opportunities to continue working for the implementation of second-phase action in a comprehensive and balanced way and pushing the talks into a new phase. China would continue to contribute to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, the normalization of relations between countries concerned and peace and stability in Northeast Asia.

The chief negotiators of the five parties other than China, including Kim Kye Gwan of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Akitaka Saiki of Japan, Kim Sook of South Korea, Christopher Hill of the United States and Alexei Borodavkin of Russia all praised China for its key and constructive role of pushing forward the six-party talks. They agreed that the heads of delegation meeting was held at a critical moment for the six-party talks and had made progress with the joint efforts of all parties concerned. It remains difficult tasks to comprehensively implement the remaining action of the second phase and move the talks into the next phase. The six delegations pledged to strengthen communications and cooperation, overcome difficulties and push for great progress of their talks.

Wu Dawei, head of the Chinese delegation and Vice Foreign Minister of China was present at the meeting.
