|Chinese Corner Unveiled in Mariano Marcos State University|
On September 3, Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) unveiled Chinese Corner (CC) located at the University Main Library in the beginning of the new school year. The CC contains various book titles, a television set, DVD player, teaching materials, and photo exhibits to be used by university faculty and students.
The unveiling ceremony was led by MMSU President Shirley C. Agrupis, Chinese Consul and Head of Post Zhou Youbin, together with Atty. Saul Lazo, Sangguniang Panlalawigan member and head of the education sector of the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte (PGIN), and some university officials.
President Agrupis said that the establishment of the Chinese Corner is another milestone for MMSU. "With the Chinese Corner in MMSU, there will be no more boundaries in knowing more about China in terms of culture, education, and technologies." She also extended her heartfelt gratitude to the Chinese Consulate in Laoag for its unrelentless support to MMSU especially during the pandemic expressing that the consulate never stopped sharing China's resources by delivering PPEs and masks to the university.
Dr. Agrupis also mentioned that MMSU established cooperation with Chinese Embassy and Chinese Consulate since 2003. "The Chinese Corner reminds us not just our current beautiful partnership but as well as our hope and zealous anticipation of a stronger and resilient collaboration.
In Consul Zhou's message, he said that language is a bridge of cultures. The Chinese Corner will not only be a resource for students to learn Mandarin, but also a platform for young people to learn more about modern China and the history of China-Philippine friendship. Earlier this year, Shandong Province of China also donated PPEs to their sister province Ilocos Norte. And recently, the two provinces held an online meeting regarding post-pandemic cooperation, which fully reflects the mutual assistance and solidarity between China and the Philippines. Chinese Consulate in Laoag also donated PPEs to local educational institutions including MMSU. "We look forward to seeing more and more young people learning Chinese and become messengers between the two countries."
Meanwhile, Atty.Lazo expressed that MMSU is a welcoming institution in the North which makes it a perfect venue for the Chinese Corner. "We commemorate the rich history, astounding influence, and continuing internationalism displayed by the People's Republic of China through the establishment of this corner. We hope to continue to strengthen the ties between our partnerships and how we can help each other towards fruitful partnerships."
After the event, attendees were also invited to experience the Chinese paper-cutting art.
