Yang Jiechi Says China Attaches Importance to the Annapolis Conference on the Middle East Issue

On November 27, 2007, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi who attended the Annapolis conference on the Middle East issue told the Chinese media that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the conference and believes it is a major effort of the international community toward the settlement of the Palestine-Israel issue.

Yang said that China welcomes the document of common understanding on solving the Palestine-Israel conflict through negotiations issued on the morning and thinks highly of the speeches delivered by all the parties concerned. Leaders of both Palestine and Israel indicated their commitment to pushing forward the final status talks so as to reach the peace accord at the earliest date possible, realizing the establishment of the Palestinian state through negotiations and properly handling the final status issue, which not only serves the fundamental interest of the Palestinian people but also guarantees the building of "two states" of Palestine and Israel and their peaceful coexistence.

He stressed that China supports the efforts of all the parties concerned to push forward the Middle East peace talks on the basis of related United Nations resolutions and the principle of "land for peace", the roadmap plan and other important resolutions and agreements. China believes the conference presents a sound opportunity which should be made best use of.

He said that the Chinese government maintains friendly relations with the Middle East countries and is committed to building comprehensive and lasting peace in the region. China will continue to play a constructive role and join hands with the international community to solve the Palestine-Israel issue and push forward the peace undertaking in the Middle East.

Earlier Yang delivered a speech to the conference and expounded the position of the Chinese government on the Middle East issue.
